NASCAR handed down the largest monetary fine in its history Wednesday and suspended a driver and crew chief for using an engine that was too big. Driver Carl Long was suspended for 12 races, docked 200 driver points and his crew chief Charles Swing was fined $200,000. Swing was also suspended until August 18. Danielle Long, Carl’s wife and the person listed as the car owner was also suspended 12 races and docked 200 owner points. All three were placed on probation until the end of the year. NASCAR found problems after the team was forced to change the engine after last Friday’s practice for the All Star Showdown, a qualifying race for the All Star Race. The engine that was removed was sent to NASCAR’s Research and Development in Concord where it was found to have cylinders larger then what is specified in NASCAR’s rulebook. Long finished 35th in the Showdown race making only three laps before retiring with engine failure. Long hasn’t raced in a NASCAR Sprint Cup points paying race since 2006. The highest fine previously levied by NASCAR was $150, 000 to driver Robby Gordon’s crew chief Frank Kerr in March of last year. The largest amount of points docked by NASCAR had been 100, which occurred several times over the last few years. ______________________

Carl Long and Team Responds to Biggest NASCAR Penalty and Suspension Ever
You could say this has turned Carl Long's life upside down.
Carl Long has responded to the enormous NASCAR penalty and suspension he received yesterday. In a statement on his website, he said:
We purchased an engine from a reputable builder at the beginning of the season. We overheated the engine in practice and had to change it. We had the option to withdraw and go home before admitting it to inspection. Trusting that our blown engine wouldn’t have any problems passing NASCAR tech, we submitted it and put our other motor in the car to get ready for the Showdown. As everyone knows it didn’t pass tech. The rules are 358 cubic inches and ours is 358.17 cubic inches. The .17 is as wrong as if it would have been 400 cubic inches. This engine is 50 horsepower less than top teams but it was all that could be afforded. I would have never knowingly went to the race track with a big engine!!!

I got a little inside scoop on this and I cant tell you how I kwow this, if I told you I might have to kill you. I heard this fine could put carl long out of business. He is seeking a legal team to take on NASCAR and the engine builder. Looks like Nascar will be busy dealing with lawers and lawsuits for a while. (mayfield and long). ______________________

Instead of punishing the drivers and teams in a sport that is fan based and on the verge of losing the biggest sponsors they have (the big 4) they should be more leanient with the rules and just let them race!
I have been in the garage with my brother at a nascar race and the rule book (s) re bigger then any yellow pages you have ever seen. What could posibbly be wrong with Robby Gordons car. It went through a massive tech before it was allowed on the track and nothing was said. Its kinda like some crap that happened at our local track a few races ago. One of the cars that finished in the top 3 was in tech after the race and he was DG'd because they said his rear end was offset 1". We dont go through a massive tech by a team of officials any time of the year and our rules are very vague as to what we can and can not do and I thought it was chicken S*** that they DG'd him without a warning.
Whatever is wrong with Robby's car im sure is not bad but since he has a way of speaking whats on his mind when the media is around, I am sure that nascar is always looking for a way to shut him up because of it.......... ______________________ Mike lewis.......aka, Speed Racer |

Robby Gordon penalized for rear axle housing violation
(May 27, 2009) – NASCAR has issued penalties to the No. 7 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as a result of rules violations committed at Lowe’s Motor Speedway earlier this week.
The No. 7 car, driven and owned by Robby Gordon, was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4I (any determination by NASCAR Officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-10.6H (rear axle housing exceeded the maximum specified toe of plus or minus one degree) of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rule Book. The violation was found during post-race inspection on May 25.
As a result, Gordon has been penalized with the loss of 50 championship owner and 50 championship driver points. Crew chief Kirk Almquist has been fined $50,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. (NASCAR) ______________________
